Rebirth Cyber Split

PressPlay Cinema had the pleasure to speak to David B. Reed, writer and illustrator for Rebirth Cyber Split saga book. This story seemed to be ahead of it’s time, with religious references and AI implementations. We decided to asked him some questions about his creation, and this is how it went;

David, the idea of the “Mini Soldier” feels both exciting and unsettling at the same time. What inspired you to explore humanity’s fascination with technology that blurs the line between machine and life?

  • That’s a great question. I would ultimately say fascination. I honestly have loved robots and the idea of how they can function in so many ways as a child. Is something about the way they can shift, and alter their appearance upon construction even after damage for some. It makes them look nearly unstoppable.

The opening creates a massive sense of anticipation before anything truly goes wrong. How important was suspense and public spectacle in shaping the atmosphere of this story?

  • At first it wasn’t even something that I even considered, but the initial story didn’t make sense from where it originally started. Though, I had the idea, I at first didn’t find it necessary to talk about. But, the further I wrote, the more I felt the story was lacking something. So, I hit rewind, and “Press Played” again, but this time with the backstory.

The televised reveal feels incredibly cinematic, almost like viewers themselves are part of the crowd. Did you imagine this scene visually as if directing a film while writing it?

  • You’re very observant. Absolutely, yes. I definitely used my skills learned in college and from previous productions to convey the sequence. I sort of laughed while writing it because it nearly felt as if I was constructing a shot list that I couldn’t unsee lol.

The robot’s ability to perform human-like actions, shaking hands, bowing, playing chess, creates an eerie emotional response. What message were you hoping readers would take from giving the machine such relatable behavior?

  • I wanted to show how advanced the technology was, and even currently is at this point in our lives. Ultimately, I wanted to make the scene fun by eliminating a few dry spots that may or may not go unnoticed.

The sudden static and feed interruption at the end of the preview completely shifts the tone. What role does uncertainty and fear of the unknown play in your storytelling style?

  • Great question. I think it doesn’t apply. I believe this is truly up to the audience to make these decisions while observing what’s in front of them. My job is only to create the story I see, start, and finish.

K-Corporation feels larger than just a company, it almost acts like a symbol of unchecked ambition. Were there any real-world inspirations behind the corporation and its pursuit of innovation?

  • Hmmm…? Let me think. I’ll have to reframe from answering this question lol. Maybe next time. I honestly don’t know. (We caught him off guard! buahahahaha!)

Your writing balances technical imagery with public excitement in a very believable way. How did you approach building a world that feels futuristic yet grounded in reality?

  • I appreciate the high regarded compliment, and again admire your observation. Storytelling is very complicated. Especially when creating from scratch. It can be a headache. I think the best advice I can give in this regard to creating something unique that you’re perhaps intrigued or passionate about is “Don’t listen to the outside noise.” Tell the story you want the world to hear.

The “Re-Birth” title shown during the presentation sounds deeply symbolic. Without revealing spoilers, what does rebirth represent in the larger themes of the story?

  • Great question. I Pass! Lol. You’ll have to stick around and find out. Maybe we’ll never know lol. (Great hooking strategy ;))

Many science fiction stories focus on the dangers of artificial intelligence, but this preview also highlights society’s obsession with entertainment and spectacle. Was that commentary intentional?

  • I definitely see the similarities, but it isn’t something I’m quite concerned with. It is something I’m simply allowing for the larger picture of the story.

If readers could walk away from your book with one lingering question about humanity, technology, or power, what would you hope that question is?

  • I would say “Be true to yourself, and maintain your faith in Christ.” I think this ultimately is what our world needs today. Salvation.

This was definitely one of those interviews that keep us wondering, and we’re glad to have a sneak peak into the mind of it’s creator. His book is free via Kindle, where you can access through our home page, or even clicking on the book cover in this page, You can also get a physical copy for $9.99.
